Adventure race is a multi-sport race where you navigate a course by trekking, biking, rappelling, kayaking, paddling and orienteering. Maps and compasses are allowed, but electronic GPS devices are not allowed.
Minnesota Adventure race participants are often in teams of two or four. The teams must complete the race by going through a series of checkpoints along the way. The lengths and distances of the races vary from a few hours and few miles to several days and hundreds of miles.
Orienteering is the ability to find your way through several checkpoints on an unfamiliar course using a map and a compass. The course is usually in a remote and unfamiliar area. Competitors are timed as they complete the course satisfactorily. Out in the woods, one needs to think and make decisions based on strategy, studying the map, figuring out the terrain and choosing the best routes.
When participating in Adventure races or orienteering, it is advisable to dress appropriately for the weather. The dress also depends on the type of course you are trying to conquer. If you are a beginner and are simply following the trail, you can sport comfortable clothing and footwear. For advanced participants who navigate the more challenging and/or swampy terrain, you need to wear protective clothing, shoes and helmets to protect against falls, bugs, water and other hazards.
