The Minnesota Guitar Society (MGS) is a non-profit organisation that is mainly run by volunteers from different backgrounds. It was founded in 1985 and aims to promote the guitar as an instrument. This is accomplished through a newsletter that’s published every two months, and through multiple public discussions and workshops, and through concerts.
It also works to produce, release and market new music, as well as bringing together professional guitarists, amateur guitarists, and the community at large.
To promote musicians in Minnesota, the MGS holds many events throughout the year.
Some notable events include:
A classical music concert by the award-winning Paris Guitar Duo. The host of this event changes every year.
An instrumental and vocal jazz performance by Duke Robillard
A mixed genres show featuring Peter Ostrushko, a gifted player of the mandolin.
Should you know of an event where the guitar is played extensively you can contact the MGS by email at calendar@mnguitar.org. The event may be included in the Society's calendar of activities.
Those who like playing the guitar will want to participate in OpenStage, which is a relaxed monthly meeting where guitarists with any level of experience meet and play for and with each other. And of course they have a good time in the process, but you can also choose to listen and learn. All are invited to the meetings which are held at Coffee Grounds in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
You are encouraged to apply for membership to the Minnesota Guitar Society and enjoy the member benefits, which can include ticket discounts to events sponsored by the Society, and a year's subscription to the Guitarist newsletter. You also get a chance to advertise for free in each issue of the newsletter. More information on this can be obtained in the current season brochure. So come and let all the guitarists play.
