There is something special about you that makes you feel that only you possess it or only you can accomplish certain things. Some of these special things are what defines us and just like human beings, different places have different things that define them as well.

These special attributes can be a rich history, cultural events, the people and their lifestyle or the architectural designs used in the place.

Minnesota is a place that has more than just the lakes which it is synonymous for, it has its own cherished moments that it’s people proud of and value so much. A tour of the state will give you insights into the Minnesota heritage.

The Minnesota History Center should make your list of destinations while on the hunt for the Minnesota heritage. Located in St. Paul, this museum has both permanent and temporary exhibits which include the Minnesota’s Greatest Generation, Grain Land and Weather permitting. The museum also hosts lectures, concerts, and family days among other events all year round. The center also has the Minnesota Historical Society Library and Archives where you can enjoy doing your own research.

For information about arts and crafts, photographs and posters can be found on the photos and art database of the historical center. During your tour you will be able to listen to stories about the collections from the curators and conservators.

There are different collections that include the Hill Family collection consisting of close to 1600 cubic feet of papers, photographs, and objects. Plus experience the civil war collection that has around one thousand objects in relation to the war and conflicts in the Dakotas. Some of the objects include firearms, equipment, uniforms, flags and swords. The Christie Civil War letters that describes more about the war and contemporary politics can also be found here.

The Sibley House Historic site in Mendota is another place that you should visit while on the trail of Minnesota heritage. The building is from the 19th century fur trade, and housed the residence of the first governor of the state. A guide will take you on a tour around the site and more discoveries about the buildings’ rich history will be revealed to you. The next destination is the Lac Qui Parle Mission from where historic advances in the Dakota dictionary, Dakota language and gospel can be learned. It also happens to be the location of the 1826 fur post and mission.

In the St. Paul area you will find the Historic Fort Snelling that was once the farthest out post of the United States of America in the homeland of the Dakota Indians. Programs of the World War 2, the Civil War and the Dakota history can be viewed here.

You will also experience the cannon firing that take place on a daily basis and other special events are all lined up for you during your tour.

In Minneapolis there is a museum that was built on the ruins of the world’s former largest flour mill. The Mill City Museum has the flour tower, an eight-story elevator show and baking laboratory where you will sharpen your baking skills before heading to the rooftop to have the magnificent view of the Mississippi river and the St. Antony Falls, lock and dam.
